Commanding Chaos for Coworking, Open Source and Creative Communities

Facebook Fixes It

Fri, 09/08/2006 - 09:01 -- rprice

This post over at TechCrunch pretty much says it all:
Techcrunch » Blog Archive » Facebook Folds in Face of Student Revolt

When you have a social network, and anything happens that the users don't like, they will use the tools you gave them to organize and expose the "violence inherit in the system" (or what have you). It is part of the magic of 'democracy'.

I was invited to join a "Students against Facebook Feeds" group myself. Crazy.

Backlash from Facebook and Digg users

Thu, 09/07/2006 - 07:38 -- rprice

Why, Facebook?

"Social networks to date have been these big unmanageable messes. Facebook is addressing that by giving users a tool to consolidate the information they care about." -Fred Wilson, via Scripting News

"one user, one vote--that's the rule" say the top 5 digg users after Jay and Kevin promise to take the wieght off of top voter's diggs.

These sites are trying to make things easier for the mass of their users, not the top 1%. If they end up alienating people, someone else will fill in the gaps, because neither of these site's traffic is going to decrease anytime soon. There will always be more n00bs to step in (at least until the next hot thing comes along, and there isn't one yet).

Seriously. You as an individual are not most important. If you don't like it, use the fun preferences that Facebook gave you to turn off your river, or use one of the other million digg clones on the planet. Problem solved, end of bitch fest.

1-800-HACKER'D!!!

Wed, 09/06/2006 - 17:27 -- rprice

The 800 number at my job (printing4pros.com) was broken today. After many a greuling hour on hold with the phone people, we found out all their 800 numbers (or possibly every 800 number in the country) was not working today.

Now I wonder: since all the phone systems are digital now (at least at the switching points), then does this mean the phone servers were hacked? Someone figured it out? Sounds good. I don't know why, but I think it's funny when something breaks and it doesn't have an effect on me. Call it Schadenfreude, call it Sadism, it's still funny.

Your thoughts?

Radio Appearance

Thu, 08/31/2006 - 18:43 -- rprice

Edit: This broadcast was sabotaged by the evil gremlins, so Marc and I recorded a make-up podcast to say "sorry" to everyone who tuned in. Check marcwithac.com for more.

Today at 2:00 PM Eastern Time, (11AM Pacific) I will be playing a 30 minute set on WPRK 91.5 FM here in Orlando. Marc with a C is the name of the act, and I will be playing drums.

You can LISTEN ONLINE from anywhere in the world by grabbing the live streaming audio at WPRKDJ.org and clicking in the upper right corner where it says "Listen Online". It's really that simple. The stream will probably open in Windows Media Player for about 9/10ths of you people. Did I say it's that simple?

Tune in damnit!

google turbocompliance - Google Search

Wed, 08/30/2006 - 08:35 -- rprice

Who Googles for Google? My new friend from New York, that's who!

google turbocompliance - Google Search

This guy thought it would be good to type google in to google, like the search engine won't work without it...

Does that work for other things?

google cervosystems - Google Search

google ryanprice - Google Search

google zanzibar lounge - Google Search

This is some good SEO - maybe I should keep the secret to myself. Thanks, Christopher for revealing this strategy to me.

iTunes Shares the Wealth

Tue, 08/29/2006 - 07:33 -- rprice

Either I am out of the loop or this is breaking news:

Dear Podcaster:

When promoting your podcast, it pays to provide a link to your podcast page in iTunes. Here's why:

1. Your podcast's rankings in the Top Podcasts lists and the podcast category pages are based largely on how many users click the “Subscribe” button on your podcast page. The higher your ranking is, the more people will see your podcast.  For more information on how to create links to your podcast page, see "Linking to Your Podcast" in the Technical Spec:

http://www.apple.com/itunes/podcasts/techspecs.html

2. By joining the iTunes Affiliate program, you can earn a 5% commission when you drive traffic to your podcast page on iTunes and generate sales of music or video content during the same 24-hour user session.  You also have exclusive access to Apple-designed banners that you can use to promote content.  For more information on the program or to sign up today, please visit:

http://www.apple.com/itunes/affiliates

If you have additional questions on the iTunes Affiliate program, visit:

http://www.apple.com/itunes/affiliates/faq.html

Best Regards,

The iTunes Podcasting Team

This just came across my email. Discuss.

Valleywag'd!!

Mon, 08/28/2006 - 17:55 -- rprice

Wow.

First of all, thank you Wordpress for including the Technorati ego widget on the dashboard of my favorite blogging software. Second, thanks to Technorati for being an awesome blog search engine. I'm sure that's how some of my new traffic has been coming in.

Example: Valleywag linked to me. I got the link for saying Jason has guts.

Too bad it happened while I was on vacation. I didn't post much or even read most of my daily blogs while I was out.

Tonight will actually be my first normal night in my own bed in over 3 weeks. We slept here Saturday after the show, but promptly left so people could go to work, and I could go to the Refresh PHP User Group.

Mike asked me to help out with podcasting the meetings: at least they are only once a month (last Sundays). I am seriously going to start making calls for contributors; I don't have time to be a media guru right now.

Waiting for Gimp to Load

Mon, 08/28/2006 - 07:26 -- rprice

Waiting for Gimp to Load

Originally uploaded by Thick Mints.

Gosh, I tried to download the Gimp, because installing it on my new MacBook Pro didn't seem to transfer over like I had hoped, but then I discovered it and tried to open it. It was like a race of whether the download or the slow-ass X11 would win. Enough time to take a pic in photobooth.

Hooray free software. (and webcam on the bezel of my screen)!
