Gosh, I tried to download the Gimp, because installing it on my new MacBook Pro didn't seem to transfer over like I had hoped, but then I discovered it and tried to open it. It was like a race of whether the download or the slow-ass X11 would win. Enough time to take a pic in photobooth.
Hooray free software. (and webcam on the bezel of my screen)!

oh I remember trying to have that fun. There is also GimpShop you might want to try. It has more of a photoshop look and feel, like the shortcuts are the same.
