Greg Dunlap on structure and power in the Drupal community

Fri, 10/31/2014 - 08:13 -- rprice

just be the people who build Drupal and let the rest go by the wayside? We have spent the vast majority of our time together largely operating under that last banner, but that doesn’t mean that we have no shared values. It just means that they largely go unstated. Which is funny because I think if I were to take a poll of the people reading this, we’d find that on a lot of these social and organizational issues our heads are pretty well aligned. Here are some examples. Do you think the diversity of our community is important?

Birth of the Global Mind

Fri, 09/12/2014 - 05:59 -- rprice

the Web has become the leading platform for harnessing collective intelligence. Wikipedia is a virtual city. Connected smart phones have become our “outboard brain.” Through device automation, Apple has imbued retail clerks with superpowers in its stores. Watson, the AI that beat human champions at “Jeopardy,” is now being deployed to advise doctors in real time, having read ALL the scientific papers. YouTube has mastered the attention economy. Humanity has a shared memory in the cloud. Data scientists rule. The global mind is not an artificial intelligence.

Florida authors the focus at Bookmark It store - Orlando Sentinel

Sun, 04/27/2014 - 13:05 -- rprice

Direct sales aren't just a recipe for small press success; they're a recipe for survival, said Ryan Rivas, Burrow's publisher. "The main challenge in reaching the retail market is the terms of sale with bookstores and online stores, which, in the era of Amazon, usually entail taking 55 percent off the retail price," said Rivas. "Add even a reasonable distribution fee and the [profit] margin is best viewed through a microscope." In the small-press world, authors take the reins of marketing, a process that relies heavily on local connections.

Mon, 02/24/2014 - 10:33 -- rprice

Orlando now has a tech and startup community directory: Orlando.io. Created by Orrett Davis, the directory lets users add their own names, a brief bio, photo and list of skills. As of this writing there were 39 members, but with the February 18th screening of the documentary Orlando Rising and the coming of the SXSW-like Orlando Interactive Digital Conference in 2015, one can only assume this list will grow.

Florida Hospital and UCF help Bithlo transform - Orlando Sentinel

Wed, 11/27/2013 - 06:24 -- rprice

McKinney knows the magnitude of the work left to do. An adult GED program is supposed to start soon. The school, now kindergarten through eighth grade, is expected to double in enrollment this fall — if a new septic system is finished in time. There are plans for a hair salon, commercial kitchen, laundry facility and community hydroponic garden, all before year's end. And he has barely begun on Bithlo's two biggest problems: unemployment and the dilapidated trailers that are home for hundreds of its residents.
