What Data Visualization Can and Can't Tell Us About Pennsylvania's Voter ID Law | TechPresident

Thu, 08/09/2012 - 13:55 -- rprice

"It appears that Pennsylvania's new strict photo ID requirement may be in effect a racially discriminatory voting procedure," Tamara Manik-Perlman, Azavea's spacial data analyst, wrote in a recently published blog post.

But she admitted that the findings are limited in scope because the analysis is confined to the city of Philadelphia, the only geographic area for which Azavea has all the relevant datasets.

Hilary Mason: From Tiny Links, Big Insights - Businessweek

Wed, 05/23/2012 - 10:40 -- rprice

The 33-year-old wrote a program to crawl the Web and download menus from New York eateries. It took her down a rabbit hole of restaurant exploration. She didn’t figure out the perfectly average spot, but she learned that there are 173 different burgers to order in the West Village—but 363 in the East Village, and at lower prices.

bitly blog - Device Usage on the Social Web

Fri, 05/04/2012 - 21:28 -- rprice

device should definitely be a consideration when you create and share content on the social web. Think carefully about the physical context of how people will read your content! If you’re making a tablet application, make sure you test it with someone late at night lying in bed, and if you’re making an early-morning newsletter, you know exactly what time and device to target it at.

GNU Octave

Sun, 04/29/2012 - 23:27 -- rprice

a high-level interpreted language, primarily intended for numerical computations. It provides capabilities for the numerical solution of linear and nonlinear problems, and for performing other numerical experiments. It also provides extensive graphics capabilities for data visualization and manipulation. Octave is normally used through its interactive command line interface, but it can also be used to write non-interactive programs. The Octave language is quite similar to Matlab so that most programs are easily portable.
