Learning to Love Blocks Again | Drupal GovCon

Tue, 05/24/2016 - 18:43 -- rprice

With the release of Drupal 8, the core blocks system is now a powerful publishing system for content in sidebars or landing pages. Blocks have types, fields, revisions and many other benefits now that they are full Entities. If you are a coder, you'll be happy to know that these block types can also be created and extended using OOP techniques.

If you still use Drupal 7, have no fear! The Drupal 8 Block improvements are largely a port of the Bean module (Block Entities Aren't Nodes). Many of the techniques outlined in this session will be applicable to Drupal 7 with Beans.

Entity Query API | Drupal.org

Thu, 05/05/2016 - 09:15 -- rprice

Entity Query API fills the gap between Drupal 8's built-in RESTful Services and Views with an easy to use, out-of-the-box means for loading, filtering and paging entities in a RESTful style. Essentially, this module provides an API to the Entity QueryInterface.

Any enabled entity gets an endpoint at /entity/{entity_type} which responds to GET requests.

You can apply conditions, sorts, and ranges to your query for the given entity type.

The Sad State of Web Development — Medium

Tue, 05/03/2016 - 10:48 -- rprice

2015 is when web development went to shit. Web development used to be nice. You could fire up a text editor and start creating JS and CSS files. You can absolutely still do this. That has not changed. So yes, everything I’m about to say can be invalidated by saying that.

The web (specifically the Javascript/Node community) has created some of the most complicated, convoluted, over engineered tools ever conceived.

Honoring DrupalCon Volunteers

Tue, 04/12/2016 - 15:13 -- rprice

Track Team - with two to three volunteers per track, this is the team that sets the tone of what content you will be hearing in sessions. They begin thinking about this at least 5 months before the Con and meet weekly to move the session content forward. Between writing track descriptions, reaching out to speakers to curate sessions, reading every single session submission, helping build the schedule and later acting as coaches for their speakers, this team signs up for a long and heavy time commitment and the fruits of their labor results in amazing sessions.
