Now You Know Fridays: The promising future of un-printing

Thu, 04/26/2012 - 08:24 -- rprice

it turns out that reusing paper is easier on the environment than recycling it, that’s probably why the folks at Tree Hugger are giving the un-printer some ink. “Wide use of this technology could have a huge impact,” they predict. “Reusing paper could reduce emissions by 50 to 80 percent over paper recycling.” Recycling involves trucking it to a plant for sorting, mixing it with water to make a slurry, and then spreading it with huge rollers to make “fresh” paper. All of this requires energy, which produces greenhouse gases.

Amid this 11-hectare expanse of ancient rusting machinery, waste piles and grinding construction equipment is a converted brick sugar warehouse where a team of Swedes and Brits are poring over blueprints and renderings. LandProp Services bought the land in 2009. Their vision is to turn this grey netherworld, once planning approval is done, into a tightly packed neighbourhood they’ll call Strand East.

Backyard buffet - Food & Drink - Orlando Weekly

Mon, 04/02/2012 - 12:50 -- rprice

before fulfilling my adult version of Augustus Gloop's self-indulgence, I decided to learn plant identification from an experienced forager. Deane Jordan, aka Green Deane, teaches classes on foraging in Central Florida and writes about foraging extensively on EatTheWeeds.com. He got his start as a 4-year-old, eating the plants his grandmother and mother picked during their daily walks in Maine,

New $1B Orlando-to-Miami passenger rail plan unveiled - Orlando Business Journal

Mon, 03/26/2012 - 08:40 -- rprice

a privately owned, operated and maintained 240-mile passenger rail line to link Orlando to Miami using a right of way that runs through the downtown areas of South Florida’s coastal cities

the goal is for the trains to average 100 mph, with speeds generally faster in rural areas than in urban areas.

In contrast to the heavy public funding for high-speed rail, FECI's announcement indicated its All Aboard Florida system would be privately funded but cost less because it would largely utilize existing tracks.
