Culture 2 Go - Visual & Fine Arts - Orlando Weekly

Thu, 08/09/2012 - 11:11 -- rprice

Urban ReThink's Book Making workshop Wednesday, led by Greg Leibowitz and Adrian Gonzalez, both veterans of the Flying Horse Editions print studio. (Local illustrator Carly Jean Andrews will also be on hand.)

"Take a piece of paper. Fold it eight times, and now you have a book," Leibowitz says.

It seems simplistic, even self-evident, but it's that simple act of transformation that first fascinated Leibowitz, who delved into the processes of print by interning at local letterpress concern Mama's Sauce as well as Flying Horse.

Arts help Orlando economy: Arts help Orlando economy, study says - Orlando Sentinel

Wed, 08/08/2012 - 15:25 -- rprice

When seven Central Florida counties were factored in, the study showed that the arts contribute $264 million annually to the economies of Orange, Seminole, Osceola, Lake, Volusia, Brevard and Polk counties.

Conducted by Americans for the Arts, aWashington, D.C.-based national advocacy group, the study did not measure ticket sales or entry fees, but tallied other spending created by cultural organizations — everything from the groups' rents and payrolls to patrons' expenditures on transportation and baby sitters.

Luminous Tide Studios: Artwork of Christine Betow

Mon, 07/30/2012 - 15:07 -- rprice

Christine Betow Seerveld recently moved to Orlando, FL where she spends her days making metal art. She studied music theory and mathematics at Whitman College and outdoor recreation at Western Washington University. Somehow from this hodge podge of interests she took a love of form, structure, geometry, and the natural world and has applied it to her art. She first attended Burning Man in 2006 where she saw The Flaming Lotus Girl's piece, Serpent Mother. This is what first inspired her to take up welding.

Johnson Arms

Mon, 07/30/2012 - 14:54 -- rprice

I’m just your typical customizer of NERF and other seemingly innocent toy weapons. I specialize in Military, Video game and Steampunk styles, but I can do custom work if you need it (Including resin kits and whatnot!)

As I have new items ready, I’ll be making them available on Etsy.com and eBay so check them out. Most of my work is requested, so don’t be shy

Good Nerd Work - Elizabeth Rissman's Blog

Wed, 05/09/2012 - 11:07 -- rprice

I was invited to become a committee member of Tech Thursday events at Urban Rethink, a progressive co-working space that emphasizes collaboration between disciplines such as art, science, technology, and community. Even though it is volunteer work, it is incredibly rewarding, as I’ve met incredible people and have been able to continue in my Nerdom.
