Library Makerspaces: Bringing Access to Knowledge in a Whole New Way

Mon, 03/28/2016 - 12:00 -- rprice

To me, public libraries — the availability of free education for all — represent the collective commitment of a community to its future. They symbolize what is most important, a commitment to educating the next generation. The role of a public library should also adapt over time, and that time is finally here. It’s time to plan how we’re going to build the future and what place public libraries have, should have, or won’t have. The goal of this article is to get everyone talking about one of our great resources, the public library, and its future.

“It’s good to see more stuff coming out of Orlando,” said Willa Riggins, president of FamiLab, about Factur. “It sounds like they will be a little more structured, which serves a slightly different market. [Factur] seems like they do more prototyping.”

There will be daytime memberships for businesses, evening memberships for those that want to work on a personal project on a regular basis, weekend warrior memberships for people just getting started and full memberships. Brown says he hopes to attract all types of members. This might be an engineer working on a project for work, an artist building his next piece, a teacher working on their lesson plans or the hobbyist who just wanted to try to build something this weekend.

Here's why The Refinery is looking at Orlando - Orlando Business Journal

Wed, 01/08/2014 - 05:34 -- rprice

the strength of FamiLab is in the ideas created there. And that's a big reason why they're looking at Orlando as an area to expand to. “Just on an innovation standpoint, it’s a very rich setup that they had there,” Dauphin said. “The hardest part [of starting a company] is having the idea to leverage. That’s the strength of FamiLab: good people with very good ideas.”
