A Kinect-Powered Animation That Evolves With Your Body Movements | Design | WIRED

Tue, 06/24/2014 - 14:01 -- rprice

As visitors move through the gallery the story progresses and Mr. Kalia begins transforming. The experience is more Dalí than Disney. Mr. Kalia’s body is covered by locks, his hands turn into gushing fountains, and birds begin flocking to branches that sprout from various parts of his body. Mr. Kalia’s transformation was brought to life using an impressive toolchain that included the Kinect, C++, Coffeescript, CSS, Google Compute Engine, Nite, Node.js, OpenFrameworks, Openni, Paper.js, Socket.io, and Tween.js, all to be rendered in a Google Chrome browser window.

Kinect-Like 3D camera | hackengineer

Tue, 04/09/2013 - 08:32 -- rprice

Want to take 3D pictures? Need cool things to make with your 3D printer? This 3D camera build uses a Structured lighting technique to create a 3D representation that can be rendered with any 3D software. Structured lighting is basically a set of images that are sequentially projected onto a scene and captured with an ordinary CMOS camera. The deformation of the structured light is ran though an algorithm to determine the depth at each pixel. The resulting X,Y and Z coordinates (3D point cloud) are used to reproduce a 3D model of the scene.
