Falling in Love 5 Minutes at a Time April 25, 2008
Posted by Ryan in : Blogging, Podcasts, Quotes, Puppets, Trends, BarCamp, BlogOrlando, Friends, Twitter , add a commentA few years ago at the second Orlando Puppet Festival, I was trying to sell Heather Henson on the idea of my podcasting about the festival becoming official. Needless to say, she’s super-busy running the festival, and we don’t have time to get into all the ins and outs of podcasting, so she asks me to give her a sample. The next time I see Heather I hand her a CD, and she’s grateful for the ability to time-shift her decision-making process.
The following day I see her, she’s a bit frustrated with me, because she says “I put this in my car and nothing happened, you gave me a bad CD!” Oops! Not the case, in fact it was a collection of every podcast I’d released to date - totaling around 80 hours of audio, or about enough to fill 60 regular CDs. “They’re MP3’s” I said, “Normally you’d have to spend hours downloading them all, and I’ve saved you the trouble!” Heather retorts, “But how do I know where to start?” She didn’t like having the entire library of congress and no card catalog (OK, not the ENTIRE library, but still…).
This brings me to an interesting point I haven’t dwelled much on in the past year and a half. How do we begin to introduce people to something like, let’s say Lady Raptastic, which has more than 80 hour-long episodes by itself, not to mention all the other shows Mark Baratelli produces. I suppose the old adage “You’re only as good as your last [whatever]” may come into play here, but that’s just not how it is with blogs and most podcasts.
I was having a conversation with someone at BarCamp about this very subject. She was getting into blogging based on a few pokes by her friends, and she was worried about writing something relevant. I told her “The magic of blogging doesn’t happen in an instant, you sort of fall in love 5 minutes at a time.”
I don’t really know where else to go from here, but suffice it to say there will likely be a “part 2″ of this post, and perhaps more. I’d love to hear your thoughts. I’d especially like to see what the 200+ attendees of BlogOrlando have to say about the subject.

You can check out my full post about Orlando Puppet Festival over at BloggingFringe.com, but here’s the short version:
This weekend, a parade of puppeteers will precipitate through downtown in an un-pompous display of consonance…. or they’ll just knock your socks off with some kickass puppeteering. This isn’t the stuff your nieces and nephews are watching on Nickelodeon, we’re talking real theatre with one of the oldest art forms in the world as the showcase.

A mashup of Jim Henson’s Muppets with action movies like Scarface and Hannibal, and apparently Kill Bill as well. Fozzie never makes an appearance, but they do turn Miss Piggy into bacon…
This video was on the front page of MySpace today… yesterday is was Tom Green “ghost riding the whip” in the middle of a corn field. Today’s video is at least funny.

From Jim Hill:
this next phase of Disney’s “Living Character Initiative” program. These folks were just standing around at the party, minding their own business. Only to have this rocket ship-shaped craft roll up right next to them. And the next thing they knew, these remote controlled AA versions of Bunsen & Beaker would begin interacting with them.
Hooray Disney for actually leveraging your purchase of the Muppet characters.

If we didn’t have all the piracy and sharing, the media companies wouldn’t have seen how valuable all the sharing really is, and this clip wouldn’t be available. (Notice the disclaimer at the end about Muppets Holding Co., LLC)

Well, the Holiday crush is over and it is time to look ahead to the new year and how Florida Creatives will be one of the hottest things to hit Orlando since DMAC (if you don’t count this little thing called The Red Chair Project, or CityArts Factory of course).
We had a lot of great suggestions for the next event, but I think I am going to go with what I know for now, and that’s something a bit closer to the heart of downtown and hopefully not so noisy… the echo in Dexter’s was deafening at times.
Monday, Jan 15th

Five Things You Don’t Know About Me… December 21, 2006

This is this really neat thing bloggers have been doing to raise their search engine rank recently. It is really neat because it gives you some insight into things one might not normally read on that person’s blog… oh, that’s a bit redundant, eh? Here goes, and I am stealing some of my ideas for things you don’t know from Alex who tagged me.
- My brothers and I have been doing homemade video since I was very young, like 8 years old or so. I did videos with puppets, titles, A/B editing and even some rudimentary compositing. We were called PFN, for “Price Family Network”. Props to my dad for buying that video equipment.
- I am seecretly a fan of some girly stuff from the 80’s… like the Rainbow Brite motion picture. I have no idea why, the imagery from that film just sticks in my head. Maybe I just like flying robot horses A LOT!
- I met my girlfriend on a dating site. I have actually met some very nice people through that site, I should be Web 2.0 and donate money to them sometime. I owe them some good times.
- I used to think I was going to be a technical director for 3D graphics in films and TV. I even took some community college classes when I was in Michigan to try and get some more 3D creative experience, but I just kept coming back to the web.
- I was in two service fraternities in college, one for community service and one for service to the college band. That makes me an Eagle Scout and a card-carrying band nerd at the same time.
Ok, I guess next comes tagging of other people.

Quote of the evening by Becky Lane:
Blogging community?
The next event probably won’t be at Dexter’s, although that is a nice place if you don’t want to talk so much. Here is the list of suggestions so far: Crooked Bayou, Moonlight/Roccos?, Lk. Eola Wine Co., 310, Fiddler’s Green, 3/9, Tom & Jerry’s, Bull & Bush, Cleo’s, Cafe Tu Tu Tango.
Pretty soon there will be a Google Groups or a mailing list of some sort for getting out announcements, so stay tuned.
