Impro Raises the Theatrical Bar | AMERICAN THEATRE

Mon, 11/24/2014 - 05:01 -- rprice

In the years since, I’ve been privileged to watch Impro rehearse and I’ve seen the company perform UnScripted takes on Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Stephen Sondheim and John Ford. (They also do Tennessee Williams, Charles Dickens and L.A. noir, among others.) The beloved authors and genres they enrich are both refreshed and irrevocably altered by their touch. It is the most impressive sort of homage—the kind that tells you these improvisers are essentially slumming in some literary neighborhoods (sorry, but Rod Serling never wrote anything as good as Impro’s riffs on his themes).

Should immersive theatre audiences accept greater responsibility? | Lyn Gardner | Stage | The Guardian

Thu, 11/13/2014 - 10:17 -- rprice

In the past, it was all so easy. When you bought a theatre ticket, you could be pretty confident that you would sit in a row with other people, watch the play in the dark and clap at the end. The fourth wall ensured that was all you had to do. No longer. Audiences are increasingly asked to be participants or collaborators; to take part, sometimes to follow instructions, and occasionally even to have agency. One of the fascinating things about Bordergame is that online participants apparently have the power to control the theatrical game and make decisions that change outcomes.

Dawn of the Voxelpunks – by Noah J Nelson : LA Bitter Lemons

Fri, 06/27/2014 - 06:09 -- rprice

At the moment VR resembles video games more than cinema. Creators in that medium are already familiar with the prospect of telling stories and design experiences that live in 360°. Yet it is only in the past few years that great stories have been made by forging empathic connections between their audiences (players) and the work. Titles like Bioshock showed how a literary sense of perspective could be used to play head games with the player. Last year’s Gone Home used some of the same narrative tools in the fashion of a memory play.

A Kinect-Powered Animation That Evolves With Your Body Movements | Design | WIRED

Tue, 06/24/2014 - 11:01 -- rprice

As visitors move through the gallery the story progresses and Mr. Kalia begins transforming. The experience is more Dalí than Disney. Mr. Kalia’s body is covered by locks, his hands turn into gushing fountains, and birds begin flocking to branches that sprout from various parts of his body. Mr. Kalia’s transformation was brought to life using an impressive toolchain that included the Kinect, C++, Coffeescript, CSS, Google Compute Engine, Nite, Node.js, OpenFrameworks, Openni, Paper.js, Socket.io, and Tween.js, all to be rendered in a Google Chrome browser window.

The Pig, or Václav Havel's Hunt for a Pig by Edward Einhorn — Kickstarter

Sat, 02/22/2014 - 11:37 -- rprice

The play, based on a dialogue that Havel wrote in 1987, is a shaggy-dog tale about his attempt to put together a zabíjačka (a traditional Czech pig roast) for his dissident friends, framed as an interview with a clueless American journalist. As he tells the comic tale, he provides veiled commentary on everyday life under Communism, disguising it so that it can slip past the ever-present censors. Acclaimed Czech director Vladimír Morávek rediscovered the piece and, together with Havel, combined it with sections from Smetana's operetta, The Bartered Bride.
