Visual Dimensions

Fri, 06/27/2014 - 09:11 -- rprice

This monthly vodcast series gives you an opportunity to participate in an open conversation with industry experts about the latest strategies and tools for developing visualizations and interactive experiences! Our first vodcast, on February 20th, will be co-hosted by NASA’s visualization expert, Robert Simmon who will discuss best practices for creating visualizations for NASA’s Earth Observatory. From use of color, to image choice, to use of symbols in mapping, Rob will take us through his tried and tested process for visually communicating data about our world.

Visualization API | drupal.org

Thu, 06/06/2013 - 09:27 -- rprice

Visualization is a module for Drupal 7.x that provides a solid and easy accessible way to visualize data. It provides a theme hook that takes a data array and some options and will then render a chart in-place. It also provides a Views Display plugin so that users can easily visualize data retrieved through Views. The different charting libraries are pluggable through the CTools Plugin system; the module provides an implementation for the Google Visualization API and Highcharts.

This Is the Real Political Map of America—We Are Not That Divided

Wed, 11/14/2012 - 17:47 -- rprice

This is the real political map of the United States of America after the presidential election. A fascinating view, much different from the maps you saw that night, which showed an artificial, binary divide. But these maps demonstrate that there is not such a huge gap between rural and urban America.

D3.js - Data-Driven Documents

Wed, 08/08/2012 - 17:04 -- rprice

D3.js is a JavaScript library for manipulating documents based on data. D3 helps you bring data to life using HTML, SVG and CSS. D3’s emphasis on web standards gives you the full capabilities of modern browsers without tying yourself to a proprietary framework, combining powerful visualization components and a data-driven approach to DOM manipulation.

House Party! The 3-D Light Show You Can Control With an iPad or Wii | Wired Design | Wired.com

Mon, 07/23/2012 - 17:58 -- rprice

Floating — a new album by Danish electronic artist Rumpistol / Red Baron — design studio Futura Epsis 1 made something that was a bit of both.

Floating’s live show features a hypnotic 3-D display, controlled by an iPad app, that you can download for your home. The idea is that the show can be projected anywhere — from large arenas to living rooms. “We came up with the idea of a realtime 3-D sound-visualization as an installation for concerts and live-events as well as interactive installation for clubs,” says Andreas Rothaug, Head of Development Futura Epsis 1.

Beautiful Art, Created With Code

Fri, 07/06/2012 - 00:38 -- rprice

In labs people have been experimenting with computer vision for a long time, like being able to track a body. We can go back almost 20 years and find examples of that at the MIT video lab, designing interfaces that track someone's arm or hand. It's really only with the release of the Sony iToy where that became something that was more public. And now with the Kinect, it's become massively public. So that's an example of the technology changing.

Piano Lightbox » minor9th.com

Thu, 07/05/2012 - 18:28 -- rprice

I’d like to make a piano which spews light, cleverly, depending on what keys are pressed. It should be fairly seamless and not overt, so the workings need to hide inside, but the basic premise is:

Someone plays the keys -> Some magic processing happens -> The music is interpreted, tastefully, in light form and slips out from above the keybed, over the top of the piano and beyond.

GNU Octave

Mon, 04/30/2012 - 02:27 -- rprice

a high-level interpreted language, primarily intended for numerical computations. It provides capabilities for the numerical solution of linear and nonlinear problems, and for performing other numerical experiments. It also provides extensive graphics capabilities for data visualization and manipulation. Octave is normally used through its interactive command line interface, but it can also be used to write non-interactive programs. The Octave language is quite similar to Matlab so that most programs are easily portable.
