Artist Spends a Decade Tweaking Robot That Draws Beautifully Organic Portraits

Tue, 07/26/2016 - 10:48 -- rprice

I just assumed that the act of repeatedly looking at the person was merely for show, to add some perceived personality. I was wrong! Trasset share with me the research paper in which he describes the incredible work that went into creating a robot that actually takes actions to mimic a person in order to recreate an image that it has seen.

Julian Opie, David Shrigley, Cao Fei, and Other Animators Illuminate Something at the Core of Art | MIT Technology Review

Tue, 08/18/2015 - 07:28 -- rprice

It is very much of its time. As Brian Droitcour noted in Art Forum, few works got as much attention in 2008, let alone works in construction (the making of RMB City was constantly on view in London’s Serpentine Gallery). The passage of half a decade has given it a period look. Game technology has moved on, producing ever greater verisimilitude. All works of art contain clues to the date of their creation. But there are specific problems for artists using software created for film animation or digital games.

Bloor West artist displays personal ‘brand of silliness’ at Runnymede library

Wed, 01/28/2015 - 11:52 -- rprice

It’s this love affair that inspired the character of Boris the robot, star of his own graphic novel, Boris Robot of Leisure. Published in March 2013, it’s an unexpected “human” story that combines “retro-futuristic science fiction, mid-century cocktail culture and silent comedy” as readers follow Boris on his quest for direction and contentedness. “I’ve always had affection for goofy 1960s sci-fi and the Tomorrowland gadgets that never quite made it into our future,” Miller told The Villager.
