A Digital Writers Style Guide for Dynamic Publishing

Wed, 03/30/2016 - 14:56 -- rprice

The trick is to use the rem unit introduced in CSS3, which refers to the root element size. In mPDF, 1rem is equivalent to the font size of the HTML body element. All other elements which appear as blocks in the columns, such as headings, subheadings, and info boxes, need to have a vertical size which adds up to an exact multiple of the body text or its line-height. Using rem makes the calculation easier, and also means that changes to body text size will scale other elements proportionally.

Coding Horror: The Future of Markdown

Mon, 11/05/2012 - 09:39 -- rprice

I propose that Stack Exchange, GitHub, Meteor, Reddit, and any other company with lots of traffic and a strategic investment in Markdown, all work together to come up with an official Markdown specification, and standard test suites to validate Markdown implementations. We've all been working at cross purposes for too long, accidentally fragmenting Markdown while popularizing it.

Of Bears, Bats, and Bees: Making Sense of the Internet of Things | Blog | design mind

Tue, 09/04/2012 - 12:16 -- rprice

Bats are what prompted me to write my “Mobile Apps Must Die ” blog post as their app-for-every-bat approach just isn’t sustainable. As we get more and more bats in the world, the user overhead of app maintenance is going to break down. This is the primary difference between bears and bats: bears carry their interaction within them as they can afford big screens and pointing devices. Bats, being small and inexpensive, need to have it added on by another device.

Open Internet of Things Assembly | June 16 & 17th 2012, London

Thu, 07/05/2012 - 21:07 -- rprice

We, the undersigned, believe that the class of technologies currently described as the “Internet of Things” has genuine potential to deliver value, meaning, insight, and fun as well as a totalitarian control society. [Some words about potential to support evidence-based policy, catalyze the emergence of self-aware publics, and enhance the specifically political agency of human users.]

on Quality: Let's have a look at some recently landed Web APIs for Firefox

Thu, 02/02/2012 - 08:51 -- rprice

Let's have a look at some recently landed Web APIs for Firefox
So, without further ado (as there's been too much "to do" about it) let's take a look at what we presently have (landed or about to land) regarding our latest (Firefox) Web APIs.

You'll need the latest xul fennec builds to run these. Technically, these also run on the latest birch nightly, but that one is presently undergoing a major facelift due to rendering and related issues.
