The Art of Programming — Art of Programming — Medium

Wed, 12/31/2014 - 13:57 -- rprice

Respect the work of others, even if you think there is something with a similar purpose already out there. It's their expression. They are not trying to reinvent the wheel. They are trying to create a better wheel, or a wheel that works better for their purposes.

We need a stronger creative culture in the Software Industry — Medium

Wed, 12/31/2014 - 10:54 -- rprice

I believe the future of programming can only be lead by coders with genuine artistic spirits — they won’t be afraid of failing, and this is essential for coming up with really good ideas. The creative programmers will drive software engineering towards new edges, while also working hard to make programming more accessible. We will have more hobbyists — people who don’t code for money, and don’t want to pursue a career in software engineering, they just want to use programming as a tool.

On Samsung Gear VR Launch Day, Oculus Discusses The Potential For Mobile VR | TechCrunch

Tue, 12/09/2014 - 12:55 -- rprice

The Gear VR project is worth a lot of examination because it’s a fairly unique partnership in the broader consumer electronics market, but also because it will help shape the path of virtual reality in general. Based on my conversation with Luckey and Cohen, I get the sense that this first hardware is a seedling that will require a lot of tending from all involved to grow into something more substantial, but the motivation to tend that garden seems strong from all involved.

Green Honey

Keep testing different models and learn something new from your dataset. There is a way of thinking that treats visualization as a magical process that prettifies the output, yet the only way we can make a meaningful graph is when we discover something meaningful during our research. People are relying on us to see the world. Out of everyone, we are the ones who need to have these interesting tests / models / questions / hypotheses at hand because if we don't know the color “red,” our story will never have “red” in it.

Nathan Selikoff — Artists & Algorists

Tue, 12/02/2014 - 12:11 -- rprice

what really drew me to Selikoff as an artist is his commitment to interaction that does not just employ a digital medium. His portfolio of work also includes some very physical and analogue interactions that made me very curious as to how he viewed his practice. I asked the Orlando based artist about real time interactions, how he got into programming and creating applications for the Leap Motion.

Art Hack Day | Packt

Mon, 12/01/2014 - 11:05 -- rprice

an event for hackers whose medium is art and artists whose medium is tech. A typical Art Hack Day event brings together 60 artist-hackers and hacker-artists to collaborate on new works in a hackathon-style sprint of 48 hours leading up to a public exhibition and party. The artworks often demonstrate the expressive power of new technology, radical collaboration in art or a critical look at how technology affects society. The technology used is typically open, and sharing source code online is encouraged.
