A Kinect-Powered Animation That Evolves With Your Body Movements | Design | WIRED

Tue, 06/24/2014 - 11:01 -- rprice

As visitors move through the gallery the story progresses and Mr. Kalia begins transforming. The experience is more Dalí than Disney. Mr. Kalia’s body is covered by locks, his hands turn into gushing fountains, and birds begin flocking to branches that sprout from various parts of his body. Mr. Kalia’s transformation was brought to life using an impressive toolchain that included the Kinect, C++, Coffeescript, CSS, Google Compute Engine, Nite, Node.js, OpenFrameworks, Openni, Paper.js, Socket.io, and Tween.js, all to be rendered in a Google Chrome browser window.

How Disney built and programmed an animatronic president | Ars Technica

Tue, 06/24/2014 - 10:57 -- rprice

According to an article from the defunct Persistence of Vision, Audio-Animatronics figures' sounds were recorded onto tape, like a bird's chirping. When the tape was played back, the sound would cause a metal reed in the system to vibrate. The reed's vibration would close a circuit, allowing electricity to cross it and power a pneumatic valve in the figure to move (in the case of a bird, opening its mouth). When the sound stopped, the circuit would open again, and the bird's mouth would return to its neutral, closed position.

How A Seemingly Impossible Game Is Possible

Tue, 06/24/2014 - 10:31 -- rprice

We go through a few other objects that are procedurally generated in the game. Rhinos, space ships. Ream clicks “view variants” on all of them. And then he keeps clicking them and, sure enough, new variants keep showing up. “You’re building a blueprint,” Murray said. “And that’s true of everything in the game. So say one of our artists will build something and that will take say a week. But what they get from that is every possible variant of that.

Immersive Cinema And The Age of Voxelpunk

Sat, 06/07/2014 - 05:14 -- rprice

“The basic elements of editing a film and telling a story on film rely on the frame and cuts. Neither of these exist,” Oscar nominated filmmaker Danfung Dennis told me in another part of the GDC hall. He was there giving sneak peaks of his in-development VR film Zero Point. “As a photographer I’ve always put the story inside of four lines and focused the viewer into a frame. But here when you’re looking at this full 360° the audience can look anywhere.” Zero Point stitches together the feeds of a handful of RED cameras to create a panorama view.

Thomas Thorspecken finds beauty in the mundane - Visual & Fine Arts - Orlando Weekly

Thu, 05/01/2014 - 13:23 -- rprice

“I bought my desk, bought the same computer I was working on at Disney, and spent several years at home teaching myself computer animation,” Thor says. “After several years alone I just couldn’t take it, staring at that computer screen, so I got out and started sketching.” That led to his next major creative phase, which launched in 2009 with his project to publish a sketch of Orlando on his AnalogArtistDigitalWorld.com blog every day for the whole year.
