Why Is It So Hard to Make a Website for the Government?

Wed, 11/23/2016 - 14:05 -- rprice

The Code for America team’s plan had always been to leave the scarier stuff off the website — questions like, “Have you ever traded food stamps for explosives?” or “Have you ever committed a felony?” Those questions could be answered during the live interview. The key was to settle on how much information to ask for at the start. Require too much, and users would be put off and give up; too little, and the eligibility workers, who preferred more details rather than fewer, would complain. In the end, the team settled on a compromise.

Learning to Love Blocks Again | Drupal GovCon

Tue, 05/24/2016 - 18:43 -- rprice

With the release of Drupal 8, the core blocks system is now a powerful publishing system for content in sidebars or landing pages. Blocks have types, fields, revisions and many other benefits now that they are full Entities. If you are a coder, you'll be happy to know that these block types can also be created and extended using OOP techniques.

If you still use Drupal 7, have no fear! The Drupal 8 Block improvements are largely a port of the Bean module (Block Entities Aren't Nodes). Many of the techniques outlined in this session will be applicable to Drupal 7 with Beans.

President Barack Obama: Entrepreneurs will create new apps from government data - Orlando Business Journal

Tue, 06/11/2013 - 14:24 -- rprice

the president issued an executive order that requires that data generated by government agencies be made available to the public in open, machine-readable formats when information systems are replaced or modernized. The White House hopes that entrepreneurs will use this data for new applications, just like what happened decades ago when weather data and the Global Positioning System was made accessible to the public.

Official Blog: What the ...?

Mon, 06/10/2013 - 13:46 -- rprice

we have not joined any program that would give the U.S. government—or any other government—direct access to our servers. Indeed, the U.S. government does not have direct access or a “back door” to the information stored in our data centers. We had not heard of a program called PRISM until yesterday. Second, we provide user data to governments only in accordance with the law. Our legal team reviews each and every request, and frequently pushes back when requests are overly broad or don’t follow the correct process.

Iowa City to ban red-light cameras, drones, and license plate readers too | Ars Technica

Mon, 06/10/2013 - 13:34 -- rprice

On Tuesday evening, Iowa City is scheduled to hold the first reading (PDF) of what is likely the first municipal bill anywhere in the country to simultaneously ban the local use of drones, license plate readers, and red-light cameras—three tools increasingly used by law enforcement and often fraught with privacy-related controversy. The ordinance is the result of a local petition brought forward by a citizen group (and represented by the American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa) that originally began as a referendum on red light cameras.

New Healthcare.gov is Open, CMS-Free | Development Seed

Wed, 03/13/2013 - 08:07 -- rprice

The code for the website will be open in two important ways. First, Bryan pledged, “everything we do will be published on GitHub,” meaning the entire code-base will be available for reuse. This is incredibly valuable because some states will set up their own state-based health insurance marketplaces. They can easily check out and build upon the work being done at the federal level.
