To catch a gopher tortoise near SunRail’s route - Orlando Business Journal

Thu, 12/20/2012 - 10:29 -- rprice

Because gopher tortoises are a protected species, if burrows are found on a development site that appear to be occupied, developers are required to relocate them to a safer place before they can do any site work.

That’s where Lotspeich comes in.

Ecological firms are required to set up traps to catch the tortoises and monitor them daily — weekends included — for 28 days, per state rules. If no tortoises are captured, the traps can be broken down.

Lynx FlexBus: Four Central Florida towns to try buses on demand - Orlando Sentinel

Wed, 09/19/2012 - 08:17 -- rprice

Lynx has won $3.5 million in federal grants to come up with the software and a plan to put the buses on the road by November 2013. The idea is to have the system running before the SunRail commuter train starts operations in 2014.

"You want it to be [working] pretty seamlessly before SunRail," Brock said.

FlexBus could help SunRail riders get to their final destination, as well as target "choice riders," or people who have access to cars but might be persuaded to ride a bus or train.

Thu, 06/07/2012 - 05:54 -- rprice

The reason for two separate stations: The Amtrak station, which Orange County records show was built in 1926, reportedly had several compliance issues and neither the city nor the transportation department — which acquired the property from CSX Corp. as part of its $150 million purchase of the SunRail corridor last November — has the funds to do the needed improvements.
