MacBook Random Shutdowns For Real?

Wed, 09/27/2006 - 05:36 -- rprice

Dave Winer has been complaining for weeks about his new MacBook randomly shutting down. Leo, Merlin, Alex and the gang over at MacBreak Weekly have been talking about mooing. Apparently the MacBook Pro doesn't have these problems. I'm glad I spent the extra dough.

“Affected MacBooks span the serial number range 4H617-4H635.”

I like the bigger screen and the lighted keyboard. Glossy screen is a plus, but you can get that on the small one. I also wanted a video card so I can do video stuff, so that's a nice perk and it was the deal maker for me. I don't know if I'll ever use the ExpressCard/34 slot, but we'll see. Maybe an EVDO card or some GPS fun...

BlogOrlando Podcast with Vlad and Wendy

Mon, 09/25/2006 - 22:02 -- rprice

I just posted a new podcast:
BlogOrlando - Art::meta(blogorlando.com) (direct download)

Follow the link above. Vlad was a panelist at BlogOrlando, and Wendy was one of the super-cool unconference attendees. I am running the show as usual, because at this point I don't have any "field correspondants". Any takers?

Dexter's in Thornton Park was fun, despite the loud echo-filled nature of the room, as the audio will tell you.

I'm playing a show at Stardust Tonight

Fri, 09/22/2006 - 09:24 -- rprice

Wow, Google Maps finally got the location of Stardust right!

Marc with a C and friends - the show will start at 8:30 or 9:00, and will likely go on past midnight. It's free to get in as always, and Stardust has a PFA beer selection, food, wine, and great bottled sodas.

I'm at BlogOrlando

Fri, 09/22/2006 - 08:07 -- rprice

Sitting next to me are Alex and Gavin from Emurse. I have also met Chris Heuer (pic) from BrainJams and Social Media Club.

Right now is a session about Blogging Tools by Drew and Jacob - these guys are making out with Wordpress. Not bad, but there is just so much love for the platform in this room. I guess I can't speak since I am typing on Wordpess at the moment.

Earlier was a session about Legal Issues. It got in to a lot of liability and privacy issues.

We should have more Orlando stuff. The Refresh meetings aren't anywhere near this focused.

Posting from Ecto

Mon, 09/18/2006 - 14:07 -- rprice

What exactly does this section do? I believe this is the “Summary” part of an RSS feed, but I could be wrong... this post was created in the Ecto blog editor.

I guess I can type in here too. This is a Link

<CMD+U> inserts a link.

Almost anything else has a button, but I think the button to insert a link is a little too small. Why don't links, the most popular tag, have buttons? Spell check is nice, and I imagine once we have virtual desktops (or Spaces), it will be nice to keep open a blog desktop just for posting.

Or I could just use Flock. d'uh!!!

How I got my mod_rewrite to play nice with Apache 2 and Drupal

Sat, 09/16/2006 - 20:51 -- rprice

I have been installing Drupal sites like crazy recently, and one thing that really helps a Drupal site thrive is the Clean URLs feature. Clean URLs and smart permalinks and all sorts of things require Apache's wonderful mod_rewrite to be active. This isn't very hard, but it is if you don't know what you're doing.

This HowTo assumes that you have control over your entire server. If you don't, you need to contact your hosting support, or whichever geeky cousin you are getting your hosting from.

Here are three easy steps to enable search-engine-friendly URLs:

  1. Enable mod_rewrite in your /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf
Notice: Screwing up this file will break your Apache server, so before you proceed, make sure you make a copy of your .conf file:
    ? cp httpd.conf httpd.conf.bak

Then check for this line near the top of your file. It will be just after some comments referring to DSO, and a whole bunch of LoadModule statements.
    #
    # Dynamic Shared Object (DSO) Support
    #
    ...
    LoadModule rewrite_module modules/mod_rewrite.so
  2. Allow .htaccess files to override universal rules.
This is the meat of this tutorial. Local directories need to be able to override the defaults and add their own RewriteRules. You put this in your file where you are setting up options for your root web directory. For my specific configuration, I had to put it in the first (/) one and not the next (/var/www/html) one. I tried them both.
    #
    # Each directory to which Apache has access can be configured with respect
    # to which services and features are allowed and/or disabled in that
    # directory (and its subdirectories).
    #
    # First, we configure the "default" to be a very restrictive set of
    # features.
    #
    Options FollowSymLinks
    AllowOverride All
  3. Don't forget to restart Apache!
You need to restart Apache so it will read in the new logs and restart all the processes. Every single change you make to the .conf file means you need to restart Apache. The changes won't apply otherwise. On my system, this was a simple matter of entering the following command:
    ? apachectl -k graceful
This is the "nice" way of shutting down and restarting Apache.
  4. Set your RewriteBase directory in your .htaccess file (maybe)
If you're running multiple installs of Drupal on the same domain like me, you may also need to make a change in your .htaccess file in your base Drupal directory. If your install base is www.example.com/portal, you will need to find this line:
    #RewriteBase /drupal
...and change it so it reads:
    RewriteBase /portal

That's it! Once you've done this, navigate to your admin page, like http://www.example.com/admin/settings/clean-urls and check the radio button for "Enabled". If you did something wrong, the page won't load, and you'll know something went wrong.

Hope this helps! You can get more detailed information at drupal>>node/84496

The steps in this HowTo should also help if you are installing another piece of web software like Menalto Gallery 2, Wordpress, or Mambo/Joomla.

(Blogging) Celebrities Add Value to a Company

Thu, 09/14/2006 - 02:09 -- rprice

I have just been saying something that is supported by today's episode of rocketboom for quite some time.

The first half of the video (0:00-2:48) talks about how having a community both contributing and adding value to content creates a much more rich experience than any single entity could provide, then the Frenchman asks, "So you think business could benefit from this type of collaboration?" See the resulting discussion (2:48-5:12).

The example given is Micro Persuasion.
