Commanding Chaos for Coworking, Open Source and Creative Communities

December 2006 Posts

It's OurLando, let's create it together!

Sun, 12/31/2006 - 10:42 -- rprice

I was just reading a post on the Dandelion website about the Homemade for the Holidays craft market they had this month, and I saw a word I noticed on a button at said store:

OurLando

One might say this is a marketing attempt on Dandelion's behalf, but after looking into it, I noticed that this was a concept originally developed by Frankie Messina of Apartment E, which is a local networking group that currently meets Wednesdays at Austin's Coffee (I think).

I guess the idea is very similar to that of Florida Creatives. There is a community aspect, a crafting thing, and of course buttons. I'm not sure about it all yet, but I'll have to get them on a podcast soon and ask them all about it.
I also came across another local networking group, Orlando Dorkbot. This one appears to be show-and-tell driven as opposed to just a networking event.

Holy Chrizzy, Orlando Weekly Knows About Blogging

Thu, 12/28/2006 - 19:51 -- rprice

That's right, kiddies. While following up on my last post here I saw a curious legend at the top of the page that said "Online Exlusives". Surely this must be some trick. OW makes their money from PRINT, what is an online exclusive to a print 'zine? Apparently they call it Bloggytown, and they have contributors like Jessica (no last name), Jeffrey Billman, Billy Manes and Bob Whitby to name a few. There is no announcement of the puropse of the blog, no tagline (though there is a dedicated RSS feed of some kind).

Hell, I'll subscribe to any feed for a few days, but I'm not sure what I'm getting. Why would a regular Joe want to take time out of his busy day to go over to this blog. It certainly isn't A-list enough to get its own site design, URL or even anything more than a header graphic, so why do I need to subscribe to this? What's going on in the blog that I can't get in the pages of the Weekly, and if it's that good, why doesn't it make it in there in the first place?

There's a perfectly good explanation, but I'm not sure these kids know what the reason is or that they could really say it yet. They've been doing this since at least my birthday this year (as their very pretty and oh-so-usable archive thingie tells us), which is July 18th for the curious.

Plus: they were right on top of Kerry's presidential announcement, with video (something you can't get in print).

Minus: There is no way to separate out posts by individual authors. All the posts on the first page are from the last two days or so, and may I remind you of the wonky archive again?
I thought one of the points of a newspaper or magazine was to hear from a journalist's perspective, and especially a blog on a MSM publication's website. However, there is no way to know who is writing the post until after you've read it! Perplexing...

Sorry to rant and rave so much, but this whole OW blog thing just has me in a tizzy (if I can use such a word).

Something to eMail Mom About

Thu, 12/28/2006 - 19:04 -- rprice

I'm sorry, but I really enjoy finding a web page I make on the first page of Google. Search for stardust videos and the 10th result as of now links to OrlandoVideo! The search for orlando video also puts us 4th right now.
I was on this particular search string because I am helping out the world by contributing to WiFinder.com, which is a modest site with modest Google Ads to support it that I saw on MyBlogLog (which I signed up for today).

Speaking of Ads, I tried to sign up Liberatr for Text Link Ads, but apparently I don't have enough "juice" or "thrust" or whatever euphemism for power they employ at their site. I do like the free tool that lets you compare your site to another across a number of different categories, but I was disappointed about the denial by their algorithm for the ability to sell good ads on my site (for now).

In other software/blogging/web related news, Charles and I were testing out WordPress MU this week and we were disappointed by the not-as-easy-to-use-as-WordPress-ness of the thing. I guess when you are trying to run multiple blogs off a single install base you can expect some complexities, but I am still waiting for someone to collaborate with on writing a tool to run a podcast network or for the price of Blogsmith to come to a reasonable level.
I am excited about trying out my own videoblog as a way to get across some more complex thoughts through this site, and to add to the idea that this is now "Ryan Price vs. the Media", or whatever I am calling the blog nowadays. Still, I applied to have a show on WPRK 91.5FM the other day and Charles is inquiring about writing a tech column for The Orlando Weekly. If anyone can help us get in front of some good eyeballs for that, leave a comment or use the email contact form at the top of the page (which is new in about the last 2 weeks or so).

Florida Creatives Happy Hour - Jan 15th

Thu, 12/28/2006 - 08:37 -- rprice

Florida Creatives Happy Hour - Jan 15th at Florida Creatives

Well, the Holiday crush is over and it is time to look ahead to the new year and how Florida Creatives will be one of the hottest things to hit Orlando since DMAC (if you don't count this little thing called The Red Chair Project, or CityArts Factory of course).

We had a lot of great suggestions for the next event, but I think I am going to go with what I know for now, and that's something a bit closer to the heart of downtown and hopefully not so noisy... the echo in Dexter's was deafening at times.

Monday, Jan 15th
Crooked Bayou
Central & Magnolia Downtown
6:00PM - 8:00PM
RSVP at Upcoming.org

Five Things You Don't Know About Me...

Wed, 12/20/2006 - 18:09 -- rprice

Here's the history of it so far -- Me » Alex Rudloff » Chris Finke » C.K. Sample » Jason Calacanis » Amanda Congdon » Michael Ambs » Rick Rey » Steve Woolf » Steve Garfield » Jeff Pulver.
This is this really neat thing bloggers have been doing to raise their search engine rank recently. It is really neat because it gives you some insight into things one might not normally read on that person's blog... oh, that's a bit redundant, eh? Here goes, and I am stealing some of my ideas for things you don't know from Alex who tagged me.

  1. My brothers and I have been doing homemade video since I was very young, like 8 years old or so. I did videos with puppets, titles, A/B editing and even some rudimentary compositing. We were called PFN, for "Price Family Network". Props to my dad for buying that video equipment.
  2. I am seecretly a fan of some girly stuff from the 80's... like the Rainbow Brite motion picture. I have no idea why, the imagery from that film just sticks in my head. Maybe I just like flying robot horses A LOT!
  3. I met my girlfriend on a dating site. I have actually met some very nice people through that site, I should be Web 2.0 and donate money to them sometime. I owe them some good times.
  4. I used to think I was going to be a technical director for 3D graphics in films and TV. I even took some community college classes when I was in Michigan to try and get some more 3D creative experience, but I just kept coming back to the web.
  5. I was in two service fraternities in college, one for community service and one for service to the college band. That makes me an Eagle Scout and a card-carrying band nerd at the same time.

Ok, I guess next comes tagging of other people.
Charles Krueger, Mark Baratelli, Marc Sirdoreous, The Orlando Fringe Festival, Orlando Theatre.

Thanks, Florida Creatives!

Tue, 12/19/2006 - 03:58 -- rprice

We had our first Florida Creatives Happy Hour last night, and I must say it was a success.

Big thanks to Marc, Alex, Kathryn, Kait, Emily, Becky, Charles and Ryan (me).

Keep checking Florida Creatives for more details.

Quote of the evening by Becky Lane:

Blogging community?

The next event probably won't be at Dexter's, although that is a nice place if you don't want to talk so much. Here is the list of suggestions so far: Crooked Bayou, Moonlight/Roccos?, Lk. Eola Wine Co., 310, Fiddler's Green, 3/9, Tom & Jerry's, Bull & Bush, Cleo's, Cafe Tu Tu Tango.

Pretty soon there will be a Google Groups or a mailing list of some sort for getting out announcements, so stay tuned.

What's been happening in Marketing?

Fri, 12/01/2006 - 08:20 -- rprice

Josh Hallet knows. He's the guy who put together what I might go out on a limb as saying "Orlando's First Unconference", BlogOrlando.

Over on Josh's blog he's been posting what he's learned at the American Marketing Association's MPlanet conference. If you are involved with marketing, own a business or run a website, Josh's blog will be very beneficial to you.

One of the best posts was on social computing, which was a talk by Brian Kardon of Forrester Research. He was defining social computing, and then...

One of the questions Brian says he is often is asked is, "who are these people and do the have a life?" (sound familiar). As a great exercise Brian asked the audience, "How many of you have written a review or posted a comment about a product or service?" Quite a few of the people in the audience raised their hands. Brian's response, "Well, there are quite a few of you, and as far as I know, you all have lives." So they are real people.
