At Matadero, Red Bull Adds Money (and Energy) to Culture - NYTimes.com

Thu, 10/17/2013 - 11:09 -- rprice

Now Matadero is evolving into a cultural laboratory, where a new arts financing strategy is being tested. Companies and institutions are providing financial support to supplement dwindling government arts subsidies, but with a twist: they don’t just send checks, they move in. Within the walled 59,000-square-foot center, there are public theaters and exhibition spaces that last year drew more than 500,000 visitors for music and art events and avant-garde plays.

Software People Should Learn "Art Thinking" ⚙ Co.Labs ⚙ code + community

Thu, 10/03/2013 - 12:39 -- rprice

1. Schedule Studio Time. The goal is simply to cordon off protected time. 2. Coordinate. (AKA Don't Repeat Yourself, or the left hand should know what the right hand is doing) 3. Prove the Rule by Disproving it. embrace failure as a brainstorming tool. What are the biggest, most important, most relevant questions that you believe certainly that you cannot answer? 4. Go Off the Grid. when you are most driven to conclusion, ask yourself the question you are trying to answer. You may have assumed limitations. The pause lets you realize the actual question is bigger. 5. Designate producers.

Leap Motion - Eight Great Innovation Areas

Tue, 09/03/2013 - 17:03 -- rprice

The amount of data available to businesses has exploded over the last 10 years. At the same time, we’ve seen a growing challenge – how to manage all of this information to reach actionable insights in a time-constrained, ever-changing environment. With 3D navigation and manipulation, as well as the sharing of this data in a more natural way, we’re taking a major step towards meeting this challenge.

how quickly the decision was made. “That’s the most disappointing thing about this for me – we didn’t have time,” he said sadly in response to an aggrieved co-worker. “The dream for me would have been to have this meeting a month ago and come up with ideas to make this work.” At the same meeting, though, McDaniel expressed some optimism: “We’re not closing the lid on this; we’re opening it wider.”

Wed, 08/07/2013 - 12:21 -- rprice

Interactive media are highly complex and at high risk for loss as technologies rapidly become obsolete.  The Preserving Virtual Worlds project will explore methods for preserving digital games and interactive fiction.  Major activities will include developing basic standards for metadata and content representation and conducting a series of archiving case studies for early video games, electronic literature and Second Life, an interactive multiplayer game.

See The Room That Ate Ms. Pac-Man and Three Other One-of-a-Kind Video Game Experiences Right Here

Wed, 07/31/2013 - 08:42 -- rprice

Proof that video games are art isn't just on the screen. Sometimes it can be right in front of you, in the form of an arcade classic that swallows a whole room or tricked-out gloves that let you throw a Street Fighter fireball. The video game art that viewers saw at the recent Babycastles Summit—along with a controversial hacked NES game that tackled racism and a Guitar Hero sequel that never happened— wasn't just manifested in button presses. It merged the physical and virtual worlds of play in a series of exhibits that sprang from the mind Katamari Damacy creator Keita Takahashi.

Beaglebone: Video Capture and Image Processing on Embedded Linux using OpenCV | derekmolloy.ie

Mon, 07/22/2013 - 12:55 -- rprice

How do you use OpenCV to capture and image process frames so that you can build computer vision applications under Linux on the Beaglebone – I do this using the boneCV.cpp program as described below. This code uses the OpenCV library which is available on the Angstrom distribution of the Beaglebone. Finally, I write a small program boneCVtiming.cpp to test the performance of the Beaglebone black for capturing and processing image data.
