artwork commissioned by the Urban Art Museum is funded by the local community, which means this is your chance to create something out of nothing!!! Few of us will acquire the wealth necessary to commission a public art installation or have a building named after you. Using the crowdsourcing format is an opportunity for members of the community to take ownership of their environment and the art that is created in it, and say “that piece of public art, I helped create that!”

They’ve “pivoted,” exchanging one set of advantages for a different set. Let me explain. The Walker has long been seen as an important place for contemporary art. They’ve staged groundbreaking exhibitions that have traveled far and wide. They’ve also had a rich programming history. Up until now, on their website and elsewhere, what the Walker was doing was always central and was broadcast outward to spark new conversations about the art and ideas around it. This is the model that most museums follow on the web.

What's wrong with DIY/Maker Faire/hacking/tinkering for kids — and how we can make it better | Project Based Homeschooling

Fri, 11/15/2013 - 09:04 -- rprice

Are the adults doing all the teaching? Is peer-to-peer teaching happening? (Are kids teaching other kids?) Do kids have the opportunity to turn around and mentor someone else? Do they get to grow in their role from beginner to expert? Is all the learning happening unidirectionally, with kids absorbing what adults are teaching? Are skills being learned from a variety of people of different ages and backgrounds, or do all of the “experts” look alike? Are kids encouraged to create learning tools for other kids? Do adults have all the power positions?

3D Printing Goes Mainstream Retail - Rebecca J. Rosen - The Atlantic

Fri, 11/15/2013 - 08:54 -- rprice

3D printing is not unlike the normal old-fashioned 2D printing process, according to Jones. Say someone wants to print business cards. She'll come in with a rough idea of what she's looking for. One of the staff members will begin asking questions: What color did you have in mind? What kind of paper do you like? How do you feel about this font? Then you'll print out a first-go, and it'll be close but not perfect, and you'll improve it from there.

The pi 3D Scanner

Thu, 11/14/2013 - 21:06 -- rprice

Each pole has 3 Raspberry Pies with the Pi Camera (5m pixel). The raspberries are connected to the network. Each network cable I custom made, using 4 wires for the actual networking (100mb) and 2 wires to supply 5 volt for the raspberry from one central powerfull powersupply (5v 60A). setup_illustration Each Raspberry connects to the central NAS (Qnap TS109) and load the listening software. This software listen on the network for a specific network broadcast. When this broadcast is received, each raspberry will take a photo.
