3D Printering: A Makerbot In Every School Follows the Oregon Trail

Thu, 11/14/2013 - 15:46 -- rprice

Just as in the 80s, a whole bunch of kids are going to get their hands on new technology that will change the world in a few years. Awesome. This can’t be good, though. Look at what all those Apple IIe’s were used for. Word processing, Appleworks, and Oregon Trail. Yes, it’s fun, but using a computer only as a glorified typewriter does both the student and the computer a disservice. Are we to expect the Makerbots in every classroom will be used for novel and interesting applications? Will students around the country be printing out the stuff they created in art and shop class?

Hi! I’m Jeff! « adafruit industries blog

Wed, 11/13/2013 - 07:29 -- rprice

If you’re a chiptune fan or a circuit bender you might be familiar with my notendo work. In 2001, I helped pioneer the practice of preparing video game systems to intentionally short circuit, creating generative video and digital collage from game data. Since then, I’ve been fortunate enough to perform at some legendary events, work with amazing musicians like Anamanaguchi and help establish my practice as a new art form that now falls under the umbrella label of “glitch art.”

FlipBooKit is from kinetic artists, Mark Rosen and Wendy Marvel. They create moving art that tells stories and tickles our sense of nostalgia. In late 2011, their series of motorized flipbooks based on the motion studies of Edweard Muybridge began touring with galleries, art shows and at special events internationally.

Know Your Why | How To Build A Hardware Startup | Adafruit Learning System

Mon, 11/11/2013 - 13:49 -- rprice

To figure out your why, here is a simple exercise you can take yourself through: List what you are passionate about. List all the reasons you want to start a company. List all the emotions and desires you feel. (Frustration, hope, happiness, wanting freedom, etc) List what you want to change, improve, or make better in the world. These could be literal to the activity (i.e., make something easier), the feeling your customers will have (i.e., make people happy), or something you want to change (i.e., make the world better).

Niklas Roy: We be Cyborgs!

Mon, 11/11/2013 - 13:30 -- rprice

KIKK, Namur, Belgium / October 2013 in collaboration with Kati Hyyppä “A cyborg, short for ‘cybernetic organism’, is a being with both organic and artificial parts." KIKK invited Kati and me to give a workshop in Namur around the theme “Next Utopia”. We were free to make what we wanted, and decided that it would be cool to transform ourselves into cyborgs! The workshop space was also ideal for reaching the next level of human development: A Renaissance style, empty church full of divine iconography. Regarding the cyborg building materials, we decided to leave computers and electronics out.

Jeongmoon Choi | TRIANGULATION BLOG

Mon, 11/11/2013 - 13:21 -- rprice

"Jeongmoon Choi works with thread and traces this three-dimensional line directly into volume to create illusions of perspective. The thread is coloured and used to outline or redefine the architecture of the spaces the artist invests. Drawing directly into space with her hand, the artist addresses questions about our environment, as well as about aspects of lodging and the role of nature in our urban spaces.." - Galerie Laurent Mueller.

Augmented Reality for Industrial Equipment - EquipCodes

Mon, 11/11/2013 - 13:10 -- rprice

This prototype iPad app provides walk-through instructions for creating a simple circuit on a bread board. Once the circuit is made, parts in the video feed can be touched to show extra information, such as pin outs and important specs. For testing or diagnosis, net information showing which pins are at which voltage can be overlayed.
